November: A time to celebrate healthy skin

While November is officially National Healthy Skin Month in the USA, we Brits can also take this opportunity to focus on our skin health.

Created by the American Academy of Dermatology, National Healthy Skin Month raises awareness about the importance of skincare, protection and prevention. It encourages good habits to prevent issues like sun damage and skin cancer, helping us maintain healthy skin all year long. Here are a few ways you can get involved and give your skin the care it deserves this month.

Why does skin health matter?

Our skin is far more than just a cosmetic concern – it’s our body’s largest organ and primary defence system. Beyond the usual cleanse-tone-moisturise routine, National Healthy Skin Month encourages us to delve deeper into preventative care, including protecting our skin from harmful UV rays, checking our skin for unusual moles or spots and monitoring skin changes.

The importance of sunscreen, even in the UK

Despite our notoriously grey British weather, UV protection remains crucial throughout the year. According to Cancer Research UK, over 90% of UV rays can still pass through cloud cover, making daily broad-spectrum protection non-negotiable – even during winter. This consistent protection helps prevent premature ageing and reduces the risk of skin cancer.

Skin checks

Whilst we don’t have the same dermatologist culture as the United States, regular skin assessments are becoming increasingly important in the UK. Take a few minutes each month to examine your skin for any changes. Pay close attention to moles, freckles, or spots that look different or start to change in shape, size, or colour. Schedule a check-up with your GP immediately if you have any concerns, as early detection can make a big difference when it comes to treatment.

Nourishing your skin from within

Healthy skin isn’t just about what you put on the surface. It’s about nourishing it from the inside out. A well-balanced diet rich in specific nutrients can significantly impact your skin’s appearance and function. The Association of UK Dieticians suggest:

  • Eating a balanced nutritional diet, rich in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals.
  • Getting enough of the right fats, like Omega-3, is important.
  • Staying hydrated also plays a key role in maintaining that healthy glow.
  • Vitamins A, B2, B3, B6, C, D, E, zinc and selenium are important for optimal skin health and function.

Skincare habits

While the weather may affect our skin’s needs, National Healthy Skin Month is a reminder that healthy habits should be practised year-round. Cleanse your skin gently, moisturise regularly, always wear SPF and avoid harsh products that strip the skin’s natural oils.

This November, let’s take inspiration from across the pond and prioritise our skin health. It’s never too late to establish healthy skincare habits and care for the skin we’re in.
